Our goal is to catalyze the shift of 100 Million Acres of US crop and rangeland

into certified regenerative agriculture by the end of 2025.

There’s a popular mantra among big food companies today that “there’s no clear definition of regeneration.” While that may have been true in the past, we now know that regenerative agriculture is a suite of techniques that builds soil, sequesters carbon, increases nutrient density of crops, decreases on-farm reliance on outside inputs (especially chemicals known to be toxic to humans, plants, animals, and soil), and which increases on-farm profits.

The 100 Million Acres Initiative showcases that, beyond simply having a clear definition of regenerative agriculture, we now have access to complete frameworks and certification systems that ensure that regenerative farms and ranches are actually practicing regenerative agriculture – on real acres, by real women and men who work as farmers and ranchers. This is important, because consumers need a way to differentiate between those who are just using “regenerative” as a buzzword and those who are actually doing the hard to regenerate land, plants, animals, soil, and communities.

After 10 years of intensive research by a team of over 100 scientists, journalists and farmers, the team behind the Kiss the Ground and Common Ground films vetted the exiting regenerative certifiers and aligned on three verification systems which uphold a high standard of rigor around soil health. Each of these three standards leads the farmer or rancher along a pathway with measurements, metrics, and planning. They address both practices and outcomes.

The metric for success of the 100 Million Acres Initiative is “acres in transition to regenerative agriculture.” While it takes time to transition land (hence the phrase “in transition”), what we are most interested in is the acres that are transitioning inside of a certified framework. Each of the certification systems keeps a tally of the acres of the farms and ranches with which they work. Thus, the total acres in the Initiative is the aggregated sum of the US acreage in each of the three programs.

While there is no “perfect” standard, it is our belief, based on careful research, that with the three entities below certifying 100 million acres of US-cropland, we will achieve a “tipping point” in the American food system.

That “tipping point” is our goal – for the climate, for our soils, for our farmers and for the future.
